Literature Text

It felt like the heat of Hell had risen through the earth. Almost no one dared to leave the safety of their air conditioned homes, even when the slight breezes came every few hours. Those few brave enough to venture out were soon overwhelmed by the heat and dried up like raisins. All the plants outside were dying from the lack of moisture, all turning brown and crumbling. Seering pain shot up my feet as I walked barefoot on the sidewalk. It felt like I was walking on a bed of hot coals. Unfortunately even the grass felt like it was on fire when I ran on to it. Was there no escape from this blazing heat? Some where a child screamed in pain as the fire shot through his body as he fell on the pavement. It wasn't the first heat caused scream, and it surely woulnd't be the last. My mouth longed for water like a dog longs for a scratch behind the ears. The longer I looked for shade in this Hell, the more it felt like I was melting away. How could anyone survive this endless blazing torture? I swore I could feel my brain melting out of my head. It was getting harder to breathe; every breath feeling like acid in my lungs. Over to my left I heard water sizzle and evaporate into the air. Stupid fools, I thought. Nothing could survive this heat, especially water. I continued to walk on the grass, now feeling as if my feet were being consumed by molten lava. Part of me wished to die then and there, but the other part was to determined to reach my destination. If this heat didn't disappear even the blazing grass would soon cease to exist. The giant ball of fire in the sky that caused this immense heat soon started to sink into the horizen. My insides still felt as though a fire was melting them together. All I could do was pray for relief from this heat. Pray that this weather didn't consume my dehydrated body and send me into oblivion.
my teacher in english had us write a descriptive short essay on the hottest day ever. when she was reading mine out loud to the class she actually turned and looked at me with horror and said "is this about a nuclear holocaust?" just figured it was good and decided to submit it. enjoy if it doesn't make your brain melt!
